Well done Sixth Morley. The smallest team in the competition - so it was very hard work for them. a creditable score across the disciplines and an overall 3rd place. Great work team.

July 2011 Phoenix Camp

Last camp of the year held at Phoenix Campsite. The weather was not kind but we did manage to get out and about. Visited Drighlington Fair (Birstall Woodturning) Had campfire with no rain in the evening but the overnight rain and rain on Sunday put a dampener on things. Tents away wet again.....

Scouts travelled by train to Ilkley and then navigated to Sconce - the expeditionsists did this unaccompanied the trainees with a little help.

We went by train to Burley-In-Wharfedale and hiked to Curly Hill Campsite in Ilkley - phew who would have thought it would be up a great big hill!!

The year is coming to an end. Santa will be coming soon. Before the year was out we went swimming to Barnsley Metrodome, 10-pin bowling at Hollywood Bowl and the District Carol and Awards night. Well done to you all for another fine year of Scouting.

Bridge Crossing Puzzle

There are four Scouts who want to cross a bridge at night, by the light of a flashlight that one of them has. They all begin on the same side and the bridge can only hold two of them at once. They all walk different speeds and take different amounts of time to cross the bridge, namely: 1,2,5 and 10 minutes.

Whenever two of them are on the bridge together they must walk at the pace of the slower person. Any party who crosses the bridge must carry the flashlight, and the flashlight must be walked back to the other side to bring over any remaining people. The flashlight cannot be thrown etc.

For example if the 1 minute Scout and the 10 minute Scout walk across, 10 minutes have elapsed when the get to the far side. If the 1 minute Scout then crosses back with the flashlight, a total of 11 minutes have elapsed, and there are still three people on the wrong side of the bridge!

Describe how they all cross in 17 minutes.

Caving Weekend October 2008

Caving weekend 2008 was a mixed bag. Saturday saw the heaviest rain and floods for some time and the late afternoon sessions had to be abandoned after only a few minutes. Come Sunday and it was a different story. A change of venue to the potholes around the Ribblehead Viaduct was required and groups from all over the District managed to get a good experience underground.

Start of a new term. The excitement of summer has long passed and the nights will be drawing in. The challenge to keep Scouts active and interested begins.

End of our first year

We come to the end of our first year running Sixth Morley Scouts. It has been a fun packed year and we hope you got as much out of it as we did.

Congratulations to all Scouts.

Achievements:

20 Scouts were awarded the Outdoor Challenge by completing at least 2 nights away and taking part in camp activities and games.

23 Scouts completed the Fitness Challenge by committing to a healthier lifestyle and taking part in our events including a Bleep test challenge, Badminton and hiking.

21 Scouts gained the Adventure Challenge by having a go at a minimum of 3 different adventurous activities throughout the year. From Scuba & Caving to Canoeing & Climbing well done for trying something new. A special well done to 2 Scouts who completed all 10 activities.

18 Scouts have achieved level 3 Emergency Aid with the remaining Scouts to complete missing modules in September.

By attending and committing to doing your best this is what you can expect to achieve each year - culminating in the Chief Scout Gold Award.

A superb session was held at the Lasertag venue in Brighouse. Scouts left wanting more. Another session will be planned either in September or the New Year - watch out for the handouts.

To gain an award the full requirements must be met and validated by the leadership team - or sometimes by other adults such as your tutors or teachers.

Remember - you can link some activities you do outside Scouts to gain your award. For example if you perform in a school play you may qualify for the Entertainer Badge. If you are unsure just ask.

Aldwark Bridge District Canoeing Weekend

Aldwark Bridge nr York.

12th and 13th July 2008. Well attended by 14 Scouts and 4 Leaders/Helpers. In total over 120 Scouts and Leaders from the District - very busy but well organised. Unfortunately the July weather spoilt the weekend with the river in flood until Sunday morning when it was declared safe. All Scouts had up to 2 hours on the water and took part in water challenges.

Looking forward to next year already.

Ilkley Moor Hike

What a wet and miserable day! But enjoyed thoroughly by all. Travelled on train from Morley via Leeds to Burley in Wharfedale and then hiked to Ilkley over the moors. Bath House was a pleasant surprise - learnt something new! Return trip on train to Morley - by then the sunshine had come out and we dried off our kit in the garden.

30th Anniversary Celebrations

Friday 20th June we celebrated 30 years of Sixth Morley Scout Group. All sections were represented. Thanks to all who attended. Thanks to the caterers for putting on a great spread. T-Shirt competition design was revealed and liked by all - wear it with pride at non-uniform events such as camp and activity weekends.

Bolton Abbey Hike

10 Scouts rose to the challenge of this 5 mile hike using their map and compass skills to navigate around a planned route. Thanks to all Scouts and parents who helped on the day. We rounded it off with a cricket match and football played in good spirits.

Sub Aqua Scouts

Thanks to staff and instructors at Robin Hood Watersports in Heckmondwike. 15 Scouts and leaders took part in this activity and showed great courage in overcoming any fears they had at the start. The instructors delivered a light hearted but effective coaching session covering the health and safety rules.

Robin Hood welcomes Sixth Morley back again in the future and commended Scouts on their good behaviour. Well done.

Orienteering at Oakwell Hall

14 Scouts endured the light rain to complete this activity hike at Oakwell Hall. Teams competed against each other in a series of bases to gain points.

Fitness Challenge

Scouts are working towards their Fitness Challenge Badge this term. Activities have included Badminton, Bleep Test, Hiking and Orienteering. All Scouts who show a commitment to a more active lifestyle should be able to demonstrate achievement of this challenge.

District Camp 3rd & 4th May 2008

A turnout of 15 Scouts and 3 Leaders was terrific. Weather was mixed - sunshine and showers. Wet canvas again! First Aid base and Tree recognition base were the highlights of the weekend. An evening entertainment of quizzes and campfire on Saturday was well received and the food was not bad either.

This term Scouts were invited to take part in sessions held at the Leeds Climbing Wall as they go for their adventure challenge badge. Over the course of the term 20 Scouts rose to the challenge and for those who had not attempted this before they did very well.

Metro Run Event 19th January 2008

2 teams of four entered the competition and the planned routes gave the options of between 29 and 31 stations. Well done to both teams for pushing themselves to the limit and achieving over 30 stations. We were just 3 or 4 stations off the lead set by a group of Explorer Scouts. For our first attempt this was outstanding and most Scouts had ideas of how we could improve the route for next year.

Metro Run Practice 12th January 2008

This was a successful day and Scouts enjoyed the challenge of visiting as many stations in one day as possible on a day rover ticket. We managed around 15 on this practice run. We discovered many ways to plan the journey - from the internet to text messaging and the traditional time tables. Scouts agreed to plan an activity where we would travel independently to a hike or camp.
